BioGalaxy
BioGalaxy is a new software for the
reading of 1D electrophoresis gels and the automated retrieval of bands. This software has
been developed to be used in close connection with the BioloMICS software (both
the main and the Web versions) but can be used alone as well (new since version
2.0). The advantage of the implemented original technology is that electrophoresis
profiles do not have to be locally aligned and co-normalized with previously stored
profiles. It means that molecular weights profiles can be stored in a normal database,
published on the Internet and used for remote identification. Many new features
have been introduced in the latest release.
Reading & Cleaning of Pictures
Automated Retrieval of Lanes
Lanes can also be added, modified or removed manually if needed.
Automated Retrieval of Bands
Bands can also be added, moved or removed manually if needed.
Export of Data and Archiving
After defining the reference lanes containing bands of known molecular weights,
the software is computing migration distances for all retrieved bands, as well as
their molecular weights. Those values can be exported to the clipboard or to MS-Excel.
It's also possible to store the profiles in gels electrophoresis profiles databases
that can be used later for comparisons with previously read profiles. Millions of
profiles can then be stored and later compared to unknown profiles. When BioGalaxy
is used as a module of BioloMICS, profiles can be stored in BioloMICS databases
and used for polyphasic comparisons.
Identification and Clustering Analyzes
The identification module is using a series of 8 different algorithms to compare
the unknown profiles with the ones previously archived. Millions of profiles can
be compared in a few seconds and are ranked according to their decreasing similarity
with the unknown. Several unknown profiles can be compared at the same time.
Classification of profiles is also possible using either agglomerative clustering
methods (UPGMA, UPGMC, WPGMA, WPGMC, Single Linkage, Complete Linkage, Neighbor
Joining, Ward or Lance & Williams Flexible Clustering) or the Principal Coordinate
Method.
Hardware Requirements:
The BioGalaxy software is compatible with all MS-Windows
operating systems (95, 98, Me, NT 4.+, 2000, XP).
It will work fine on Pentium II or more with 64MB
RAM. Higher values would however be better. A very
good graphic card is needed.
