Atlas of Living Australia using BioloMICS

Atlas of Living Australia will use BioloMICS for the management of all Australian Collections of Microorganisms.

The Atlas of Living Australia is working with members of CHACM, the Council of Heads of Australian Collections of Microorganisms, to establish AMRiN, a data hub to share information about the strains and cultures they hold.

ALA will also be supporting the introduction of BioloMICS software to assist those working with collections of microorganisms.

Implementation of BioloMICS will mean not only providing software, but working with each organisation to help migrate existing data, setting up the means to share that data through ALA and AMRiN, training of personnel, and ensuring adequate technical support.

Nathalie van de Wiele, a microbiologist and BioloMICS specialist from Utrecht, Netherlands, will be assisting collections in Australia with training and working with the software.

Many laboratories don't have an information technology (IT) department, nor the infrastructure to store, provide safe access to and publish their databases. Support can also be an issue when problems occur (crash, backup, installation). Many labs came to us and asked us to provide such a facility. We've heavily invested in our hardware and software infrastructure and moved it to a high-end datacenter. This allows us to securely host clients' databases, websites and provide them access to the latest versions of BioloMICS.

What do you need ? An Internet connection, a browser and of course a license that can be obtained from us. You can start the service from Windows based PCs, Macs or Linux machines. Even an old PC without much resources would work perfectly because nothing (except a small Citrix Plug-in) is installed on your PC. Everything is running on our powerful and fast servers.

How to proceed ?

1. First contact us to know the exact pricing. Price will depend on the number of concurrent remote users to the service (note: there are no limits in the number of users of the databases a client would create). It will also depend on the size of the databases that you intend to create, on the number of backups you want to keep and on the duration of the contract.

2. You get as many logins and passwords as you've acquired licenses to access the service.

3. From any Windows, Mac or Linux PC, you go to our secured website at https://citrix.bio-aware.com and you can enter your login and password.

4. The first time you start the service on a given machine, you will be asked to download a small Citrix plug-in. This won't happen anymore next time you'll use the service.

5. Choose between the BioloMICS application only or the complete remote desktop. You just click on the wanted icon. If you choose the BioloMICS application only, you will have the feeling that the BioloMICS software and associated databases are installed on your PC and you will be able to directly work with it just as if it would be on your PC (clipboard, access to local drives and printers, etc). Using the complete desktop can be useful when one wants to access more services like the management of your websites.

6. You are ready and can start working on your data and websites

If, at a certain time, you want a copy of your database, we can provide you with the latest backup. Data that are on our servers are your ownership and you can have them at any time. If you want to stop the service, you will get all your databases back and we'll destroy them from our system.
